Crochet Headband Pattern – A Free Pattern

Make this Simple Twisted Crochet Headband

I love having a project to use up leftover yarn from larger projects, such as sweaters. This crochet headband pattern is perfect for that, plus it’s super cute. The finished product is a perfect accessory for keeping the ears warm on winter days while allowing you to wear your hair in a ponytail or bun. The added twist also keeps this interesting without being complicated to create.

If you know basic crochet skills, you will have no problem creating this cute and trendy crochet headband. Using only single crochet stitches and simple seaming, anyone can accomplish this pattern.

Project Information

Finished Size: 5” wide, 18” circumference – Should fit head size of 20” circumference

Yarn: One skein of a worsted/medium (4) weight yarn – I specifically used some leftover wool yarn from a previous project with roughly 200 yards

Hook Size: E4 – 3.5mm

Gauge: 17 stitches x 17 rows = 4″ x 4″, adjust hook size to obtain gauge

Pattern

Chain 21.

Row 1. Turn and single crochet in the second chain from the hook. Single crochet in each chain to end, total of 20 stitches.

Row 2. Chain 1 and turn. Single crochet in each single crochet stitch of previous row.

Repeat row 2 until piece measures 18” (add more or less if your head circumference is not 20”).

Create the Twist

Knot your work and cut a long tail, at least 4 – 5 times the width of your headband.

Lay your headband on a surface and fold in half lengthwise (hot dog fold for anyone who remembers elementary school).

While the headband is still folded, bring the two ends together.

Wrap one side of each end into the U’s formed from the fold. See the diagram below to show how the U’s formed from the fold wrap into one another.

Using the long tail you just cut, seam up all four layers you just created together.

*Another method you can do to seam these up, is to NOT cut a tail, but instead, make your fold and wrap your headband’s ends together, then, using your crochet hook, pick up a loop from each of the 4 layers and slip stitch those 4 loops. Repeat this until the end of the row.

Weave in your ends and flip your headband right side out to get a finished twisted headband!
