To make a crochet chain, we are going to start with the foundation chain.

The foundation chain is what you create at the very beginning of any crochet project. You can also use the same method to crochet a chain stitch in the middle of your crochet project. The pattern will say something like “chain 1.”

So let’s dive right into how to make a crochet chain. To do this technique, you will need yarn and a crochet hook.

Step 1 – Create a slip knot

Make a slip knot in your yarn, leaving about a 6 – 8 inch tail.

Step 2 – Set-up your hook

Now you will want to insert your hook into the loop you just made with the slip knot. Then pull the slip knot tight around the hook (but not so tight that you can’t move the loop around on the hook, just enough so it doesn’t fall off).

Step 3 – Wrap the yarn

Take the hook in one hand and the yarn in another, you are going to wrap the yarn around your hook.

Step 4 – Pull yarn through

Now, you are going to pull the yarn you just wrapped around the hook through the loop. For the first chain, you may need to hold tail close to the hook to make it easier to pull the wrapped yarn through.

Once you pull the yarn through, you have successfully made one chain! Now, repeat steps 3 and 4 until you have as many chain stitches as you need for your project.

Note – don’t pull the yarn too tight around the hook at any point. You want it to be loose enough to slide around on the hook, but tight enough that it doesn’t just slide right off.

And that’s it! Super simple. What are you going to crochet?
