How to Make a Single Crochet Stitch

In this post, I’m going to teach you how to crochet the single crochet stitch! You can watch the video below or follow my written steps, whichever you prefer.

How to Crochet the Single Crochet Stitch

To do the single crochet stitch, you will need your base crochet chain made. In this tutorial, I already have a couple rows done, but the technique will be the same while working with your chain row.

Step 1 – Turn Your Work

Take your crochet hook and insert it into the last loop. Pull the yarn snug on your hook. Make a chain (this chain is used to get your working yarn to the height of a single crochet stitch, since that is what you will be making on the row).  Now, turn your work so that the opposite end of your chain is closest to the hand NOT holding the work. This will allow you to work your way back down the chain with crochet stitches.

Step 2 – Insert hook in Chain (or Stitch)

Next, you are going to skip the chain you just created and insert the hook into the one or both loops of the second chain from the hook.

Note – when you are working the single crochet stitch on a row of stitches rather than the base chain (like in the video), you will always insert the hook into both loops of the stitch below unless the pattern tells you otherwise.

I tend to only insert my hook in one loop of my base chain stitches when starting a project because it’s easier.

Step 3 – Wrap the Yarn and Pull Through Once

Now you are going to wrap the yarn around the hook and pull it through once. You should only go through the loop (or loops) of the chain or stitch below. You should now have two loops on your hook.

Step 4 – Wrap the Yarn and Pull Through Twice

Now you are going to wrap the yarn around the hook and pull through both loops on your hook. You should have only one loop on the hook. You will also have a finished single crochet stitch!

Repeat steps 2 – 4 until you finish your row, turn and continue for however much your pattern tells you.
